masterful, masterly
Прилагательное masterful иногда употребляют неправильно, особенно в сфере спорта. Им обозначают выдающегося игрока, хотя, строго говоря, здесь следует употребить прилагательное masterly, если искомое значение «мастерский», «достигший мастерства». Masterful может иметь позитивный оттенок, когда описывает решительность и авторитет:

Mary likes her men to be masterful, since she can never make up her mind about anything. — Мэри любит мужчин уверенных в себе, так как сама она никогда не знает, что ей делать.

Но чаще это слово имеет значение «доминирующий», «командующий»:

She is so masterful with him, always telling him what to do and what to think. — Она вечно помыкает им - всегда указывает, что ему делать и что ему думать.
